I write my fantasy fiction to a careful creed:
Rule the first: It must be emotive, but packed with character-shaping action.
Rule the second: It must explore big themes, but never preach.
Rule the third: Character, plot and setting must always be evolving.
Rule the fourth: No matter how dark it gets, it must also be fun(!).
THE FIRST SCARS
Epic Dark Fantasy
Perfect for fans of Steven Erikson and Elden Ring.
"A great grimdark debut" Fantasy Faction
"The mysterious world-building of Elden Ring with the character-driven detail of Sanderson"
David Green, author of Empire of Ruin
"So much fun"
The Lorehunter
What makes THE FIRST SCARS stand out are the juicy, visceral, mysterious ways that the resurrection system shapes character and plot.
Inspired by Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, the main characters can resurrect at specified locations upon death. Unlike a time-loop story, however, time is linear. Every poorly chosen word and poorly aimed swing of a sword shapes the world and the relationships between the characters.
The prequel novella, KILN BEAST, is also available, and follows several of the main characters, giving a peek into their dark pasts.
MEET THE CAST
Many of the main characters are referred to as 'The Branded'. It is their brands that allow them to return from death. Here are excerpts introducing some of them.
